Explore the Extreme Desert Landscapes of Chile's Atacama Desert

By Marbel Montoya for Ruta Pantera on 8/13/2026 10:30:37 AM

There are few places on Earth where travelers can witness landscapes so otherworldly that they resemble the surface of Mars. Stretching across northern Chile between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, the Atacama Desert is widely recognized as the driest non-polar desert on the planet. Here, salt flats shimmer beneath an endless blue sky, volcanoes rise above colorful lagoons, steaming geysers erupt at sunrise, and some of the clearest night skies on Earth reveal a universe of stars. Exploring the Atacama is not simply a vacation—it is an expedition into one of nature's most extraordinary environments. The charming oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama serves as the gateway to the region. With its adobe architecture, welcoming plazas, local restaurants, and adventure outfitters, the town provides an ideal base for discovering one of South America's greatest natural wonders.

Walk Across the Valley of the Moon

One of the Atacama's most iconic destinations is Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon), a dramatic landscape sculpted by millions of years of wind and erosion. Jagged rock formations, towering sand dunes, and salt-covered ridges create scenery unlike anywhere else on Earth. Guided excursions often arrive in the late afternoon when the setting sun transforms the desert into brilliant shades of gold, orange, crimson, and violet. Hiking trails and scenic viewpoints allow visitors to fully appreciate the remarkable geology while photographers capture some of Chile's most spectacular sunsets.

Watch the Sunrise at El Tatio Geysers

Before dawn, travelers depart San Pedro to reach El Tatio, one of the highest geothermal fields in the world. At more than 4,300 meters (14,100 feet) above sea level, the cold morning air creates enormous columns of steam as dozens of geysers erupt across the volcanic plateau. The surrounding landscape of snow-capped peaks, bubbling hot springs, and grazing vicuñas creates one of the Atacama's most unforgettable experiences. Many tours include breakfast served outdoors while the first rays of sunlight illuminate the surrounding Andes.

Discover the Altiplanic Lagoons

The high-altitude lagoons of Miscanti and Miñiques offer a striking contrast to the desert's arid terrain. Brilliant turquoise waters reflect towering volcanoes while flamingos feed peacefully along the shoreline. These pristine lakes, located within the Los Flamencos National Reserve, support remarkable wildlife despite the harsh environment. Visitors frequently observe vicuñas, Andean foxes, viscachas, and numerous bird species that have adapted to life at extreme elevations. The surrounding silence and expansive scenery make these lagoons among the most peaceful destinations in northern Chile.
Float in the Salt Lagoons

One of the region's most enjoyable activities is floating effortlessly in the highly saline waters of Laguna Cejar. The salt concentration exceeds that of the ocean, allowing swimmers to float naturally while surrounded by spectacular desert scenery. Nearby lagoons and wetlands attract flamingos and other wildlife, making the area popular for both relaxation and photography. Sunset tours often conclude with panoramic views across the salt flats as the Andes glow in the evening light.

Visit the Atacama Salt Flat

The Salar de Atacama, Chile's largest salt flat, stretches across an immense basin surrounded by volcanoes and mountain ranges. The Chaxa Lagoon sector provides one of South America's finest opportunities to observe Andean, Chilean, and James's flamingos feeding in shallow mineral-rich waters. Interpretive trails explain the fragile ecology of this remarkable environment while highlighting the importance of conserving one of the region's most significant wetlands.

Experience the World's Darkest Skies

The Atacama Desert has become one of the world's premier destinations for astronomy. Its high elevation, extremely dry climate, and virtually cloudless skies create ideal conditions for observing the universe. Evening astronomy tours take visitors far from artificial light, where professional telescopes reveal distant galaxies, nebulae, planets, and star clusters invisible from most parts of the world. Expert guides explain both modern astronomy and the Indigenous traditions that have long interpreted the night sky. The region is also home to internationally renowned observatories, including ALMA, whose powerful radio telescopes continue expanding our understanding of the cosmos.

Adventure Across the Desert

Beyond sightseeing, the Atacama offers countless outdoor adventures. Travelers can enjoy mountain biking across desert trails, horseback riding through canyons, hiking volcanic landscapes, sandboarding on massive dunes, or exploring ancient petroglyphs and archaeological sites left by cultures that flourished here thousands of years ago. The region's excellent road network also makes it ideal for scenic self-drive tours connecting dramatic viewpoints, remote villages, and breathtaking geological formations.

Planning Your Visit

The Atacama Desert can be visited throughout the year, although daytime temperatures vary considerably depending on altitude. Travelers should prepare for intense sunshine, dry air, cool evenings, and significant elevation changes that may require gradual acclimatization. Most visitors spend four to six days exploring the region from San Pedro de Atacama, allowing enough time to experience its diverse landscapes without rushing from one attraction to another.

An Adventure Unlike Anywhere Else

The Atacama Desert challenges every expectation of what a desert can be. Instead of endless emptiness, travelers discover vibrant lagoons, active geysers, towering volcanoes, ancient cultures, extraordinary wildlife, and some of the most spectacular stargazing on Earth. Whether watching steam rise from El Tatio at sunrise, floating in a crystal-clear salt lagoon, hiking across the Valley of the Moon, or gazing into a sky filled with millions of stars, visitors quickly understand why the Atacama remains one of South America's most unforgettable travel destinations—a place where Earth's most extreme landscapes reveal beauty at every turn.
