Medellín, Bogotá, Cartagena and Santa Marta: The Colombian Race for Digital Nomadism

2026 Comparative Guide for Digital Nomads: Cost of Living, Internet, Safety, Climate and Visa

By Estefanía Muriel for Ruta Pantera on 8/11/2026 10:30:37 AM

Colombia has become one of the most competitive destinations in Latin America for remote work. The country combines a low cost of living, favorable climate, and time zone compatibility with North America, and has further strengthened its appeal with the Digital Nomad Visa (V Visa), in effect since 2022. Compared to competitors like Mexico City, Buenos Aires, or Costa Rica, Colombia offers four cities with very distinct personalities: Medellín, Bogotá, Cartagena, and Santa Marta. This guide summarizes what to expect from each in terms of cost, connectivity, safety, and immigration procedures.

Medellín: The Nomadic Capital

Known as the "city of eternal spring", Medellín maintains a stable climate of 21 to 24 °C all year round and concentrates the largest community of digital nomads in the country, especially in El Poblado, Laureles and Envigado.

A realistic monthly budget for a digital nomad is around $1,200 to $1,800 USD, including furnished rent ($600-$1,000 USD in El Poblado, $400-$650 USD in Laureles), coworking space, and going out. Fiber optic internet speeds range from 100 to 300 Mbps, and the city has a wide network of coworking spaces.

Medellín's crime rate is moderate (53.4 out of 100 according to Numbeo, 2026), well below its levels in the 1990s. Standard precautions are recommended: avoid displaying expensive devices, avoid using Uber at night, and be aware of scopolamine in nightlife areas.

The growing demand for short-term rentals has driven up housing prices in popular neighborhoods, creating tension with local residents.

Bogotá: The Business Capital

As the political and financial capital, Bogotá is home to corporate headquarters, startups, and international organizations, with El Dorado airport as the main gateway to the country.

The typical monthly budget is higher than in Medellín: between $1,600 and $2,200 USD, with furnished apartments in Chapinero or Zona Rosa ranging from $620 to $1,000 USD. The digital infrastructure is the strongest in Colombia, with extensive fiber optic coverage and a wide range of coworking spaces.

The climate is the main disadvantage for many nomads: at 2,600 meters above sea level, temperatures rarely exceed 19°C and rain is frequent. Traffic congestion is another constant challenge.

Bogotá's crime rate (66.7 out of 100, Numbeo 2026) is higher than Medellín's, so greater caution is recommended, especially in the city center and at night.

Cartagena: Productivity with a Beach

A colonial city declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Cartagena combines historic walls, beaches and luxury hotels with an expanding coworking ecosystem, although smaller than that of Medellín or Bogotá.

The monthly cost of living for a digital nomad ranges from $1,400 to $2,200 USD, with rents from $375-$600 USD in the Historic Center and higher prices in Bocagrande. Internet speeds average between 120 and 125 Mbps, sufficient for video calls, although this can vary outside of tourist areas.

The hot and humid climate (28-32°C year-round) requires adaptation and increases air conditioning costs. Numbeo's safety index (48 out of 100) places Cartagena at a moderate level of caution; it is advisable to avoid walking alone at night outside of populated areas. As a well-established tourist destination, accommodation prices during peak season (December-January) can double.
Santa Marta: Nature and a Relaxed Pace

Located between the Caribbean Sea and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the world's highest coastal mountain range, Santa Marta attracts nomads who combine work with hiking, diving, and visits to Tayrona National Natural Park or the town of Minca.

It's the most affordable of the four cities: a one-bedroom apartment in the city center costs between $394 and $592 USD per month, and a coworking membership ranges from $66 to $165 USD. Digital infrastructure remains a weak point: internet speeds are slower and less stable than in Medellín or Bogotá, so it's advisable to check the Wi-Fi at your accommodation before booking a longer stay.

The expat community is small but growing, composed mainly of freelancers, writers, and photographers. Healthcare, public transportation, and international air connections are also more limited than in the other three cities.

Which One to Choose? There is no single "best" city in absolute terms. Medellín offers the best balance of cost, community, and climate; Bogotá suits those who prioritize business and infrastructure; Cartagena and Santa Marta are ideal for those seeking a coastal lifestyle and who don't depend on perfect connectivity. Those planning to stay longer than 180 days must apply for the V Visa for Digital Nomads, which requires an income of at least three minimum wages (approximately US$1,400 per month in 2026) and health insurance with repatriation coverage.
