Travel in the Time of TrumpzillaA Continuing ChronicleRegime change is easy compared to nation building. By Christopher Engholm for Ruta Pantera on 9/15/2025 8:10:46 AM |

| This morning, my home country attacked a neighbor country in our hemisphere and abducted its sitting president. I had been warning my staff at Ruta Pantera for a month that "Trump needs a victory" and Venezuela would be a "walk in the park to liberate." My Latino team members thought I was just exaggerating. |

In Cartagena a year ago, I sat with members of the Venezuela diaspora, and tried to dissuade them from crossing the Darien gap with their children. I learned of their endless struggles to make ends meet under the Chavista regimes, and how the economy in northern Colombia didn’t offer much more for them.
After eight years of economic hardship, they had decided to leave Colombia in hopes of making it to the United States, where they could pursue a decent life, a better future for their children. None of them ultimately crossed the gap because the Panama government closed it; most continue to live in Colombia, but others have returned returned to Caracas. One of those persons later became a correspondent for Ruta Pantera. At 3:30 AM last night we received videos from K. Ramirez (name changed) as she and her family took cover in their home as US bombs landed on the capital. We did not hear from her for three hours, but finally received notice that her and her family are now safe in their home. This is a story that affects the entire region, and tourism especially. We will continue to cover it with special attention on what is unfolding at ground level for the common Venezuelan citizen. The people of Venezuela want freedom and opportunity. They need good government. They need their property and national resources preserved and protected. They need aid and they need security. I have full confidence that with these essentials, the Venezuelan will rebuild their nation. |
