Cabo Froward: Protegiendo la Última Frontera Silvestre de la Patagonia

Chile avanza en la creación de un nuevo parque nacional en el extremo sur de Sudamérica.

Cabo Froward, ubicado en el punto más austral de la península de Brunswick en Chile, está destinado a convertirse en una de las áreas de conservación más importantes del continente. Esta región remota, frente al Estrecho de Magallanes, es reconocida por sus paisajes azotados por el viento, sus bosques subantárticos y su rica biodiversidad.

El parque nacional propuesto abarca más de 150.000 hectáreas, incluyendo bosques, humedales, montañas, ríos y hábitats costeros. Alberga especies emblemáticas como el puma, carpintero de Magallanes, huillín (nutria nativa) y el venado huemul en peligro de extinción, uno de los símbolos nacionales de Chile.

Estudios recientes han confirmado la presencia de poblaciones de huemules dentro de los límites del parque, reforzando la importancia de proteger estas áreas. A nivel mundial, quedan menos de 1.500 huemules en libertad, lo que hace que territorios protegidos como Cabo Froward sean críticos para su supervivencia.

Los ecosistemas marinos de la zona son igualmente vitales. El Estrecho de Magallanes alberga ballenas jorobadas, delfines australes, lobos marinos y numerosas aves marinas, creando una interfaz única entre hábitats terrestres y marinos, esencial para la investigación científica y la conservación.

La iniciativa del parque es resultado de la colaboración entre el gobierno chileno y organizaciones privadas de conservación. Rewilding Chile, inspirado en el legado de Douglas y Kristine Tompkins, aportó más de 127.000 hectáreas para incorporarlas al sistema nacional de parques.

Este modelo de asociación, donde organizaciones privadas adquieren y restauran tierras antes de donarlas al Estado, ha demostrado ser efectivo en la protección de ecosistemas patagónicos en las últimas décadas.

Una vez establecido oficialmente, Cabo Froward se convertirá en el 47º parque nacional de Chile, fortaleciendo aún más la red de áreas protegidas del país y su compromiso con los objetivos internacionales de biodiversidad.

El parque también formará parte de un corredor ecológico más amplio que conectará múltiples áreas protegidas en el sur de Chile, permitiendo que las especies migren y mantengan diversidad genética frente al cambio climático.

Más allá de su valor ecológico, Cabo Froward posee una rica historia humana. Fue habitado tradicionalmente por los pueblos kawésqar, navegantes nómadas de los canales del sur. Exploradores europeos pasaron por estas aguas y hoy, la Cruz de los Mares marca el punto continental más austral de Sudamérica.

La zona también ofrece oportunidades para el turismo sostenible, incluyendo senderismo, campamentos y centros educativos diseñados para minimizar el impacto ambiental y promover la interacción del visitante con la naturaleza.

Para Chile y la comunidad global, Cabo Froward representa uno de los últimos paisajes vírgenes de Sudamérica: un lugar donde la naturaleza, la biodiversidad y la herencia cultural se encuentran, ofreciendo lecciones de conservación para el planeta.
