Pablo Escobar’s Hippos: From Private Luxury to Environmental Crisis

The Country Faces a Controversial Decision as One of the World’s Most Unusual Invasive Populations Grows Out of Control

What began as a symbol of excess during a period marked by illicit economies has, decades later, become one of the most unusual environmental challenges in Latin America. The hippos introduced by Pablo Escobar in the 1980s now exceed 200 individuals in Colombia and continue to expand unchecked.

It all started at Hacienda Nápoles, the private estate of the former cartel leader, where four African hippos were part of an exotic zoo alongside giraffes, elephants, and other species. After the death of Pablo Escobar in 1993, the animals were left behind and, due to the difficulty of capturing them, were allowed to roam freely.

Since then, their growth has been exponential. With no natural predators and favorable environmental conditions, the population grew from just four individuals to around 170 in the 2020s, and now stands at roughly 200. Scientific projections warn that the number could reach 1,000 by 2035 if no control measures are implemented.

This phenomenon makes Colombia the only country outside Africa with a wild population of hippos, a situation that generates both fascination and concern. While some view them as a unique tourist attraction, experts warn of their negative impact on local ecosystems.

The issue is primarily ecological. Hippos alter river systems by introducing large amounts of organic waste, reducing oxygen levels in the water and affecting native species such as fish, manatees, and turtles. They also compete for resources with local wildlife and can modify aquatic vegetation.

There is also a growing risk for human communities. Considered one of the most dangerous animals in Africa, hippos can be highly aggressive. In Colombia, incidents involving livestock, crops, and even attacks have already been reported, increasing tension between conservation and safety.

In response, the Colombian government has approved a plan to control the population, including the euthanasia of around 80 individuals starting in 2026, along with measures such as confinement, sterilization, and possible international relocation.

However, the decision has sparked intense debate. On one side, scientists and environmental authorities argue it is necessary to prevent ecological collapse. On the other, activists and animal rights groups consider it extreme and advocate for alternatives such as relocation or reproductive control.

The dilemma is complex. Sterilization can cost thousands of dollars per animal and requires difficult logistics, while international relocation faces legal, sanitary, and infrastructure barriers.

Beyond the controversy, the case of the hippos reflects a broader phenomenon: the long-term consequences of introducing species outside their natural habitat. What was once a private extravagance has become a public issue with ecological, economic, and ethical implications.

Today, Colombia faces an unprecedented decision. Controlling this population means intervening in an already altered ecosystem, but inaction could accelerate environmental degradation. Between fascination and risk, Escobar’s hippos have become an unexpected symbol of how the past continues to shape the present.
