Los hipopótamos de Pablo Escobar: de excentricidad privada a crisis ambiental en Colombia

El país enfrenta una decisión polémica ante el crecimiento descontrolado de una de las poblaciones invasoras más inusuales del mundo

Lo que comenzó como un símbolo de exceso en una época marcada por el auge de economías ilícitas se ha transformado, décadas después, en uno de los desafíos ambientales más insólitos de América Latina. Los hipopótamos introducidos por Pablo Escobar en la década de 1980 hoy superan los 200 ejemplares en Colombia y continúan expandiéndose sin control.

Todo empezó en la Hacienda Nápoles, la finca privada del exjefe del cartel, donde cuatro hipopótamos africanos formaban parte de un zoológico exótico junto a jirafas, elefantes y otras especies. Tras la muerte de Pablo Escobar en 1993, los animales quedaron abandonados y, debido a la dificultad de capturarlos, fueron dejados en libertad.

Desde entonces, su crecimiento ha sido exponencial. Sin depredadores naturales y con condiciones climáticas favorables, la población pasó de apenas cuatro individuos a cerca de 170 en la década de 2020, y hoy ronda los 200. Proyecciones científicas advierten que podrían alcanzar hasta 1.000 ejemplares para 2035 si no se toman medidas de control.

Este fenómeno convierte a Colombia en el único país fuera de África con una población silvestre de hipopótamos, una situación que ha generado tanto fascinación como preocupación. Aunque algunos sectores los consideran una atracción turística y un fenómeno único, los expertos advierten sobre sus efectos negativos en los ecosistemas locales.

El problema es principalmente ecológico. Los hipopótamos alteran los ríos al introducir grandes cantidades de desechos orgánicos, lo que reduce los niveles de oxígeno en el agua y afecta a especies nativas como peces, manatíes y tortugas. Además, compiten por recursos con fauna local y pueden modificar la vegetación acuática.

También existe un riesgo creciente para las comunidades humanas. Considerados uno de los animales más peligrosos de África, los hipopótamos pueden ser altamente agresivos. En Colombia ya se han registrado incidentes con ganado, cultivos e incluso ataques, lo que aumenta la tensión entre conservación y seguridad.

Ante este escenario, el gobierno colombiano ha aprobado un plan para controlar la población, que incluye la eutanasia de aproximadamente 80 ejemplares a partir de 2026, además de medidas como confinamiento, esterilización y posibles traslados internacionales.

Sin embargo, la decisión ha generado un intenso debate. Por un lado, científicos y autoridades ambientales defienden la medida como necesaria para evitar un colapso ecológico. Por otro, activistas y sectores animalistas la consideran una solución extrema y promueven alternativas como la reubicación o el control reproductivo.

El dilema es complejo. La esterilización puede costar miles de dólares por animal y requiere operaciones logísticas difíciles, mientras que la reubicación internacional enfrenta barreras legales, sanitarias y de infraestructura.

Más allá de la controversia, el caso de los hipopótamos refleja un fenómeno más amplio: las consecuencias a largo plazo de introducir especies fuera de su entorno natural. Lo que en su momento fue una extravagancia privada se ha convertido en un problema público con implicaciones ecológicas, económicas y éticas.

Hoy, Colombia se encuentra ante una decisión sin precedentes. Controlar esta población implica intervenir en un ecosistema ya alterado, pero no hacerlo podría acelerar el deterioro ambiental. Entre la fascinación y el riesgo, los hipopótamos de Escobar se han convertido en un símbolo inesperado de cómo el pasado sigue moldeando el presente.
