Jaguar Spotted Above 2,200 Meters in Honduras, Rare Sighting Draws Attention

Discovery in the Sierra del Merendón Renews Debate on Species Adaptation and Biological Corridors

It is uncommon to find a large predator outside its typical range, and even more so above 2,200 meters in elevation. Yet this is exactly what occurred in the Sierra del Merendón, in northern Honduras, where a camera trap captured the presence of a jaguar in a cloud forest ecosystem, an unusual habitat for the species.

The recording, captured in February 2026, represents one of the few documented high-altitude sightings in the region and the first in more than a decade in this mountain range. According to monitoring organizations, more than 20 camera traps were installed in the area, but only one managed to capture the animal, highlighting both its low population density and highly elusive nature.

The jaguar is the largest feline in the Americas and one of the continent’s top predators. Historically, its range extended from the southern United States to northern Argentina. Today, it has lost around 50% of its original range due to deforestation, hunting, and habitat fragmentation, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Under normal conditions, the jaguar inhabits areas below 1,000 meters, especially tropical forests, wetlands, and regions near rivers. Its presence above 2,000 meters is rare and has only been documented in isolated cases in countries such as Mexico and Bolivia, making this sighting particularly significant for the scientific community.

One of the most discussed hypotheses links these movements to environmental change. Honduras has lost a significant portion of its forest cover in recent decades, with deforestation rates exceeding 2% annually in some regions. This transformation reduces prey availability and forces large predators to explore new territories.

However, not all indicators are negative. The presence of the feline also suggests that functional biological corridors still exist. The Sierra del Merendón is part of an ecological system connecting protected areas between Honduras and Guatemala, allowing key species to move and maintain genetic exchange between populations.

These corridors are essential for jaguar survival. An adult male can travel between 50 and 150 kilometers in search of territory or mates, requiring vast continuous habitats. Without connectivity, populations become isolated, increasing the risk of local extinction.

Camera trap technology has been crucial in understanding these patterns. Across Latin America, it has enabled researchers to estimate population densities, identify individuals, and document rare behaviors. In Honduras, data remains limited, making each record scientifically valuable.

In addition to jaguars, monitoring efforts have documented other felines such as pumas, ocelots, and margays, suggesting that despite human pressure, some ecosystems still retain important levels of biodiversity. However, this coexistence is increasingly fragile.

At a regional level, Central America faces a critical challenge: balancing development and conservation. Agricultural expansion, cattle ranching, and infrastructure continue to fragment habitats, while conservation efforts advance more slowly.

In this context, the sighting in the Sierra del Merendón is not merely a curiosity. It is a complex signal. It may reflect resilience, but also environmental pressure. The difference between these interpretations will depend on what happens in the coming years.

The challenge for scientists and policymakers is clear: to determine whether these movements represent a natural range expansion or a forced response to habitat loss. The answer will largely shape the future of one of the most powerful symbols of biodiversity in the Americas.
