El hantavirus vuelve al centro de la atención mundial tras brote ligado a Sudamérica

Casos recientes reactivan la vigilancia internacional sobre uno de los virus más letales de América

Lo que durante décadas fue considerado un problema sanitario localizado principalmente en zonas rurales de Sudamérica hoy vuelve a generar preocupación internacional. El reciente brote de hantavirus asociado al crucero MV Hondius y la muerte de varios pasajeros ha puesto nuevamente bajo atención global a una enfermedad rara, pero altamente letal, que históricamente ha tenido algunos de sus focos más importantes en Argentina y Chile.

Las alarmas se intensificaron después de que autoridades sanitarias confirmaran múltiples casos vinculados a pasajeros que viajaban en el crucero internacional, el cual había partido desde Ushuaia, Argentina. Hasta mediados de mayo de 2026, organismos internacionales reportaban al menos 11 casos asociados al brote y 3 muertes confirmadas o sospechosas relacionadas con el virus.

El caso llamó particularmente la atención porque el virus involucrado sería la variante Andes, considerada la única cepa conocida de hantavirus capaz de presentar transmisión limitada entre humanos. Aunque los expertos insisten en que el riesgo de una expansión masiva sigue siendo bajo, la Organización Mundial de la Salud y agencias sanitarias de varios países activaron protocolos de seguimiento y cuarentena para decenas de pasajeros y contactos cercanos.

La situación refleja cómo un virus históricamente asociado a ecosistemas rurales sudamericanos ahora puede convertirse rápidamente en un tema global debido a la movilidad aérea y marítima contemporánea. El crucero involucrado transportaba aproximadamente 150 pasajeros y tripulantes provenientes de más de 20 países distintos, lo que obligó a activar sistemas internacionales de vigilancia epidemiológica.

El hantavirus pertenece a una familia de virus transmitidos principalmente por roedores infectados. La transmisión ocurre generalmente cuando las personas inhalan partículas contaminadas provenientes de orina, saliva o excrementos secos de animales portadores. En América, una de las formas más graves es el Síndrome Pulmonar por Hantavirus (SPH), que puede evolucionar rápidamente hacia insuficiencia respiratoria severa.

Las cifras históricas muestran por qué las autoridades sanitarias siguen considerando al hantavirus una amenaza seria, aunque poco frecuente. Según los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC), la tasa de mortalidad del síndrome pulmonar por hantavirus en América puede alcanzar entre 35% y 40%. En algunas regiones y brotes específicos, la letalidad ha sido incluso mayor.

En Argentina, el virus mantiene presencia endémica desde hace décadas. Informes epidemiológicos recientes señalan que entre enero y marzo de 2026 el país registró al menos 32 casos confirmados y 8 muertes, particularmente en provincias del norte y zonas rurales vinculadas a cambios ambientales y aumento de poblaciones de roedores.

En Chile, las autoridades continúan realizando campañas preventivas permanentes debido a la presencia del ratón colilargo (Oligoryzomys longicaudatus), principal reservorio del virus Andes. Las zonas boscosas y rurales del sur chileno siguen siendo consideradas áreas de vigilancia epidemiológica prioritaria.

Estados Unidos también registra casos periódicos, aunque generalmente vinculados a otras variantes del virus, como Sin Nombre. Datos del estado de Colorado muestran que entre 1993 y 2023 se reportaron 121 casos humanos, con una tasa de mortalidad cercana al 63% en algunos registros históricos estatales.

A pesar de estas cifras, especialistas enfatizan que el hantavirus no posee potencial pandémico comparable al COVID-19. Su capacidad de transmisión sigue siendo limitada y la mayoría de los casos continúan asociados a exposición ambiental específica. Sin embargo, el brote reciente demuestra cómo enfermedades zoonóticas relativamente raras pueden adquirir rápidamente dimensión internacional cuando coinciden con sistemas de transporte globalizados.

El componente ambiental también resulta clave. Investigadores han advertido que fenómenos como deforestación, incendios forestales, expansión agrícola y cambio climático pueden alterar ecosistemas y aumentar el contacto humano con especies portadoras de enfermedades. La Organización Panamericana de la Salud ha señalado repetidamente que las zoonosis emergentes representan uno de los mayores desafíos sanitarios del siglo XXI.

Otro factor preocupante es la dificultad de diagnóstico temprano. Los primeros síntomas suelen confundirse con gripe o infecciones respiratorias comunes: fiebre, dolores musculares, fatiga y malestar general. En algunos pacientes, el deterioro pulmonar ocurre en cuestión de horas, lo que dificulta la intervención médica oportuna.

Actualmente, decenas de personas continúan bajo monitoreo sanitario en distintos países. Solo en Estados Unidos, al menos 41 personas estaban siendo observadas por posible exposición relacionada con el crucero. Además, autoridades sanitarias de Canadá, Francia, Países Bajos y otros países europeos mantienen investigaciones activas sobre contactos y posibles contagios.

Más allá del brote actual, el hantavirus vuelve a exponer una realidad cada vez más evidente: la salud humana está profundamente conectada con biodiversidad, movilidad global y transformación ambiental. Enfermedades que antes parecían confinadas a territorios aislados hoy forman parte de un escenario internacional donde los riesgos sanitarios pueden cruzar continentes en cuestión de horas.
