FIFA Under Scrutiny, Suspected of Selling the Future of Football

The Global Football Organization’s Commercial Expansion Opens a Debate About Money, Power, and the Future of the World’s Most Popular Sport.

For more than a century, football has been much more than a business. For millions of people around the world, it represents identity, national pride, and an emotional connection passed from one generation to the next. But behind the packed stadiums, national jerseys, and passion of supporters exists a multibillion-dollar industry now facing a difficult question: how much can football grow as a business before it changes the essence of the game? FIFA, the organization that controls the most important sporting event on the planet, is now at the center of a debate about the future of global football. Its plans to expand commercial opportunities and increase the financial value of its competitions have created a discussion that goes far beyond money: who will influence the future direction of the world’s most powerful sports brand?

For supporters of the strategy, greater commercialization means more resources to develop football, build infrastructure, and support national associations with fewer financial resources. For critics, it represents the risk that football could move away from being primarily a cultural and sporting institution and become another global financial asset controlled by private interests.

The controversy has also generated comparisons with the transformation of American professional sports, especially the NFL and the Super Bowl, where the biggest sporting competition in the United States became one of the world’s most successful commercial entertainment platforms.

The central question is no longer only about revenue. It is about identity: is FIFA modernizing football to protect its future, or is it selling a part of the sport’s future in the search for greater profits?

A Multibillion-Dollar Global Industry

The economic power of football explains why FIFA continues searching for new ways to expand its commercial potential. The FIFA World Cup has become one of the most valuable sporting events in the world. During the 2019–2022 commercial cycle, which included the Qatar 2022 World Cup, FIFA reported record revenues of approximately $7.5 billion, generated through broadcasting rights, sponsorships, hospitality, and commercial agreements. For the next commercial cycle, which includes the 2026 World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, FIFA expects even greater revenues due to the tournament’s expansion to 48 teams, a larger number of matches, and the importance of the North American market.

The financial influence of football is also reflected in the value of media rights. International competitions attract billions of dollars because they connect with a global audience larger than almost any other sporting event. Within this economic environment, FIFA introduced the concept of FIFA Forward Enterprise, a proposed commercial structure designed to increase the value of FIFA’s assets and attract private investment. Reports surrounding the project suggested a possible valuation of approximately $20 billion, highlighting the enormous financial potential behind FIFA’s competitions, brand, and global audience.

Supporters argue that this type of expansion follows a simple business principle: if football generates enormous value, more effective commercial structures could create additional resources for countries that need investment. FIFA has repeatedly emphasized that its development programs, especially FIFA Forward, have helped finance football infrastructure, training facilities, and projects around the world. However, critics raise another question: what happens when a sporting institution begins operating more like a global corporation? The concern is not that football generates money. Football has always generated money. The concern is who controls that growth and what interests will have the greatest influence over future decisions.

The Super Bowl Model: Success Or Warning For Football?

The comparison with the United States is unavoidable because few sports have achieved a commercial transformation as successful as American professional football. The Super Bowl stopped being only the championship game of the National Football League decades ago. Today, it is one of the world’s largest entertainment events, combining sports, television, advertising, sponsorships, celebrity culture, and corporate partnerships.

The NFL generates more than $20 billion annually in revenue, driven largely by media rights, sponsorship agreements, and commercial partnerships. In 2026, a 30-second advertisement during the Super Bowl reached values above $8 million, demonstrating the extraordinary financial power of the event. For some sports executives and business leaders, this model represents an opportunity for international football. FIFA has a global audience that surpasses many American leagues and could potentially unlock even greater commercial value. However, critics argue that the American model also represents a warning. The NFL operates as a professional league with franchises, owners, and a commercial structure designed around entertainment. The World Cup, by contrast, represents countries, cultures, and generations of supporters who view the tournament as part of their national identity. The risk, according to critics, is that excessive commercialization could change the relationship between football and its fans. Instead of being a shared cultural experience, the sport could increasingly become a premium product designed primarily for consumers with greater financial power.

The question is not whether football should generate revenue. No modern sport can survive without strong financial foundations. The question is whether there is a point where the pursuit of growth begins to damage the very qualities that made football unique.

The Battle Over FIFA’s Credibility

The opposition to FIFA’s commercial expansion is not only about economics. It also reflects long-standing concerns about governance and institutional credibility. FIFA spent years rebuilding its image after the corruption scandal of 2015, when several senior officials were accused in an international investigation involving bribery and corruption connected to football administration and commercial rights. Since then, the organization has promoted reforms and a more transparent image under President Gianni Infantino, who took office in 2016. However, critics argue that new commercial initiatives raise an uncomfortable question: can FIFA expand its economic power without repeating the concentration of influence that damaged its reputation in the past? The concerns expressed by parts of European football reflect this issue. UEFA has argued that major commercial transformations must maintain transparency and protect the influence of football institutions. At the same time, Infantino has pursued a strategy focused on expanding FIFA’s influence beyond Europe, strengthening relationships with football associations in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and other regions where football growth represents an economic and social opportunity.

This has created a new balance of power in global football. For decades, Europe dominated many strategic decisions because of the economic strength of its clubs and leagues. FIFA’s current approach seeks a more global structure, giving greater importance to federations from regions where football continues to grow rapidly.

The Trump-Style Dealmaking Debate

The controversy has also generated comparisons to what some critics describe as “Trump-style dealmaking” — a reference to a business approach centered on large negotiations, aggressive expansion, and maximizing the value of agreements. The comparison is not an official description of FIFA’s strategy, but it reflects a broader criticism: that the organization may be prioritizing financial opportunities and commercial growth over traditional sporting values. Supporters of Infantino argue that global organizations must evolve. In their view, refusing investment opportunities could limit football’s ability to compete in a rapidly changing entertainment economy. Critics respond that football’s greatest asset is not only its market value. Its greatest asset is trust. The emotional connection between fans and the sport cannot be measured only in financial terms. It is built through history, loyalty, and the belief that football belongs to everyone.

Host Cities And The Price Of Trust

The debate over FIFA’s future also affects the cities that compete to host international tournaments. The 2026 World Cup will be the first edition with 48 teams and 104 matches, organized across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The expanded tournament represents major economic opportunities for host cities, but also requires significant investments in transportation, security, hospitality, and infrastructure. For many destinations, hosting World Cup matches can create long-term tourism visibility, attract international visitors, and accelerate urban development. But those benefits depend on one essential factor: trust.

Governments, communities, and businesses must believe that international sports organizations operate with transparency and a long-term vision. If FIFA becomes viewed only as a commercial organization focused on maximizing revenue, it could risk losing part of the public support required to organize future tournaments. Football’s economic power exists because of its emotional power. The trust of fans, cities, and countries remains one of its most valuable assets.

The Future Of Football Between Tradition And Business

FIFA faces a historic challenge. The commercial growth of football appears inevitable. Media rights, global sponsorships, and new markets will continue increasing the economic value of the sport. But the organization must answer a fundamental question: how can football grow financially without losing its connection with the people who made it the world’s most popular game? The Super Bowl model demonstrates that sports can become extremely profitable industries. But football has a different foundation. Its power does not exist only in entertainment; it exists in belonging.

The World Cup is not simply a commercial product. For billions of people, it represents their country, their history, and their identity. FIFA’s challenge will be finding a balance between financial innovation and institutional responsibility.

Because the greatest risk for football is not making too much money. The greatest risk is that, in the search for greater commercial value, the sport could lose something that cannot be bought: the trust of the people who believe the game still belongs to them.
