Unilaterally Renaming Countries, Regions, or Landmarks Is an Act of Aggression and Intimidation

Ruta Pantera Will Keep Original Names While Apple and Google Cave and MapQuest Gains Attention

Ruta Pantera will side with MapQuest and continue to use the original name of Lake Ontario. Early this year, we decided to side with Mexico and continue the use of the original name of the Gulf of Mexico and The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. as well.

Looking to the future, we will also hold steadfast against name changes to the countries of Greenland, Cuba, Venezuela, or the Gaza Strip, believing that changing the names of sovereign countries, regions, or landmarks is a blatant act of aggression and intimidation that has no place in our hemisphere.

Recent Developments Reinforce Our Position

Since we published this announcement, Apple and Google have caved to Trump’s demands and begun using the new name for Lake Ontario on their maps for users in the United States. MapQuest, meanwhile, has kept the original name and is getting all the new attention and traffic as a result of its decision.

Maps Also Reflect History and Culture

For Ruta Pantera, this demonstrates that geographic names are much more than simple labels on a screen. They reflect history, culture, geography, and the way generations of people have known a place.

That is why Ruta Pantera will continue to use the original names. We believe maps should help travelers understand the world, not become instruments for rewriting it.
