Is the United States Losing Its Place as a Favorite Destination for International Travelers?

The United States has been one of the world’s leading tourism destinations for decades, an almost automatic choice for millions of international travelers drawn to cities such as New York, Miami, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas, as well as its national parks, beaches, scenic highways, and enormous entertainment industry. But that position is facing a new challenge: for some international travelers, the question is no longer simply what the United States has to offer, but whether they still want to spend their vacations there amid a changing political climate.

Canada provides one of the clearest signs of this shift. During the first quarter of 2026, trips by Canadian residents to the United States fell 10.6% compared with the same period a year earlier, while trips to overseas destinations outside the United States increased 6.2%. Canadian spending followed a similar pattern, rising 16.7% on overseas travel outside the U.S. to approximately C$10.1 billion.

This does not simply mean that Canadians are traveling less. In many cases, they are traveling differently. Mexico, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Japan, and France were among the destinations attracting more Canadian visitors, an important signal for the tourism industry because travelers who decide not to visit the United States are not necessarily canceling their vacations. They may simply be taking their money somewhere else.

Politics Is Becoming Part of the Traveler’s Decision-Making Process

The Canadian situation is particularly significant because relations between the two countries have been strained by trade disputes, tariffs, and political rhetoric that has affected how some Canadians perceive the United States. In August, British Columbia Premier David Eby urged residents who had alternatives to avoid traveling to the United States and instead support local businesses.

The statement does not amount to a nationwide travel ban or represent the official position of the entire Canadian government. Canada’s federal travel guidance continues to place the United States under its general level of normal precautions, although it warns travelers about strict enforcement of entry requirements and the possibility of additional scrutiny at ports of entry. Still, the episode illustrates something important for tourism: political tensions can become a factor in the destination-selection process.

Canada is also not the only country where authorities have updated or strengthened travel guidance related to the United States. Germany and several other European countries have introduced additional warnings concerning immigration enforcement, entry requirements, and potential consequences for certain travelers. Countries including France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Finland, and the United Kingdom have also updated their guidance regarding travel to the United States in recent months.

This does not mean that all of these governments are telling their citizens to avoid the United States. Travel advisories differ significantly in their wording and severity and respond to different circumstances. But from a tourism perspective, there is an important difference between a destination that is perceived as a straightforward choice and one that makes travelers stop to investigate entry requirements, border procedures, potential complications, or risks before purchasing a ticket.

The Bigger Risk May Be a Change in Perception

International tourism depends heavily on perception. A traveler choosing between New York and Paris, Miami and Cancún, California and Costa Rica, or Las Vegas and an Asian destination may ultimately make a decision based on factors that seem relatively small: ease of entry, political climate, exchange rates, the feeling of being welcomed, cost, security, or simply the desire to avoid complications.

That is why the challenge facing the United States is not necessarily that millions of people have decided to stop visiting permanently. The more subtle risk is that some travelers are beginning to ask whether there is another destination that offers an equally attractive experience with fewer concerns.

Canadian travel data illustrates this shift. In 2025, Canadian trips to the United States fell 25.4%, while spending on overseas destinations increased significantly. In practical terms, part of the money that traditionally flowed into American hotels, restaurants, attractions, shopping districts, casinos, and entertainment venues began circulating in competing tourism markets instead.

The impact is not evenly distributed across the United States. States and cities that depend heavily on Canadian visitors are particularly exposed to the decline in travel and spending. Alaska, Nevada, Maine, Florida, California, and Vermont are among the destinations identified as especially vulnerable to reduced Canadian tourism.

American destinations are already responding. New York and other cities have launched campaigns designed to bring Canadian travelers back, while tourism businesses are offering discounts and special promotions to make U.S. travel more appealing. In Las Vegas, for example, some hotels have introduced incentives specifically targeting Canadian visitors.

An Opportunity for Destinations Waiting for the Next Traveler

For Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, South America, Europe, and Asia, this shift represents an opportunity. Tourism competition is no longer only about offering better beaches, cheaper hotels, or convenient flights. Destinations also compete through their image of hospitality, stability, accessibility, and ease of travel.

Mexico is a particularly interesting example because it is already capturing part of the Canadian travel market that once flowed toward the United States. Costa Rica has also recorded a particularly strong number of Canadian visitors, while Japan and France have experienced notable increases.

This could accelerate a transformation that extends beyond Canada. When travelers change destinations and discover an alternative they enjoy, that decision can become a new habit. And travel habits can be difficult to reverse once they change. A visitor who replaces a Florida vacation with Mexico, a New York trip with Europe, or a California getaway with Costa Rica may decide to repeat that new experience the following year.

The United States still has enormous advantages: a vast tourism infrastructure, some of the world's most recognizable cities, extraordinary geographic diversity, and an entertainment and cultural offering that few destinations can match. It would therefore be an exaggeration to describe the situation as a collapse of American tourism.

But the trend deserves attention. The United States does not need to lose all of its international visitors to face a tourism problem. It may be enough for a portion of travelers to stop seeing it as the automatic choice.

In global tourism, that small hesitation can become far more important than it first appears.
