San José is Costa Rica's capital and the country's main urban, political, economic, and cultural center. Founded in 1737, it grew rapidly during the 19th century as coffee transformed the Central Valley and connected the young nation with international markets. At about 1,149 meters above sea level, the city has a mild highland climate, with an average temperature close to 24°C. Today, San José is less about monumental skylines than about the layers of everyday Costa Rican life found in its markets, museums, theaters, neighborhoods, cafés, and public spaces.

The Coffee Money Is Still Visible

One of the city's most revealing buildings is the National Theater, constructed between 1890 and 1897 when Costa Rica's coffee economy was generating enough wealth for the country to invest heavily in architecture and culture. Its construction was financed through taxes on imports, and Italian artists and European architectural influences helped create one of the most elaborate buildings in the capital. More than a century later, it remains an active theater rather than simply a historic monument.

Another remarkable chapter of San José's history is the country's decision to abolish its army in 1948. The former Bellavista military barracks subsequently became the National Museum of Costa Rica, turning a military site into a place dedicated to archaeology, history, and national heritage.
What Is Worth Seeing?

The compact central area is the best place to begin. Around Plaza de la Cultura are the National Theater, Metropolitan Cathedral, Central Avenue, and the entrance to the Museums of the Central Bank. The latter combines the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum and Numismatic Museum beneath the plaza. The current general foreign visitor ticket is around ₡8,800, with students paying less; children under 12 enter free. The museums are open daily, generally from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The National Museum is particularly useful for understanding the transition from pre-Columbian societies to the modern republic. Its location inside the old Bellavista Barracks makes the building itself part of the story. It is open Tuesday through Sunday, and admission is free for Costa Rican citizens and residents on Sundays.

For everyday life, skip the polished tourist image and walk through the Central Market. The market is a living piece of the city, filled with fruit, spices, herbs, traditional food, small restaurants, and Costa Rican staples such as gallo pinto, casados, olla de carne, and fresh coffee. This is also where the city feels most local rather than ceremonial.

A City With Green Space

Despite its density, San José has substantial urban green areas. La Sabana Metropolitan Park, on the western side of the city, occupies the grounds of the country's former main airport and is now one of the capital's principal recreational spaces. Joggers, cyclists, families, football players, and visitors share its paths and open areas. The park also contains the Costa Rican Art Museum, housed in the former airport terminal building.

Beyond the city itself, the Central Valley provides easy access to coffee plantations, mountain landscapes, and protected areas. Braulio Carrillo National Park, for example, can be reached from the metropolitan area and protects a large section of the forested mountains north of San José. Current official entrance fees for foreign visitors are about US$12 at the Quebrada González and Volcán Barva sectors.
San José After Dark

The capital's cultural calendar extends well beyond museums. The Festival de la Luz, held in December, is one of the country's best-known public celebrations, bringing marching bands, illuminated floats, and large crowds to the streets. The city also hosts concerts, theater, art exhibitions, and public festivals throughout the year. In 2026, the National Symphony Orchestra's official season includes 12 concerts, with ticket prices starting at approximately ₡2,200, while dozens of additional performances are scheduled around the country.

The Zapote festivities, held around the end of December, offer a very different experience: carnival rides, food stalls, dancing, and Costa Rican-style bullfighting traditions. These events are particularly popular with locals and provide a glimpse into the country's festive culture outside the conventional sightseeing circuit.
Getting Around

Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) is the principal international gateway and lies outside central San José in Alajuela Province. Traffic can make airport transfers considerably longer than the distance suggests, particularly during morning and afternoon rush hours. Within the capital, buses are inexpensive and extensive, while taxis and app-based transportation are convenient for visitors moving between neighborhoods. For short sightseeing circuits, walking is often the best way to experience the historic center, although routes should be planned with normal urban safety precautions.

Accommodation ranges from hostels and simple guesthouses to boutique properties and international hotels. Rather than choosing solely by price, location matters: staying near the historic center, Barrio Escalante, Los Yoses, Rohrmoser, or other established districts can significantly change the experience of the city.
